Botahtaung Pagoda, the golden pagoda spire rises to 40 metres (132 feet). The meaning of Bo is "leader" and tahtaung is "a thousand". It was named after a thousand of soldier who escorted relics of Buddha brought from India (Buddha Gaya) over two thousands year ago. The Botataung Pagoda is hollow inside and can walk through it. It is a sort of mirrored mazed inside the pagoda with glass showcases containing many of the ancient relics and artifacts which were sealed inside the earlier pagoda. In the the pagoda there is a big hole whose the relics chamber. Buddha hair relics was enearthed during the time of renovate and enshrined in the visible showcase on the interior relics chamber to see and pay respect for the pilgrims. It was built almost in the same time as Sule Pagoda and Shwedagon Pagoda. |
