The Hill is surrounded by nine small hills as if they were attending on the Majestic Mandalay Hill in their centre. These small hills are (1) Shwe Taung (gold hill) (2) Ngwe Taung (Silver hill) (3) Batamya Taung (Ruby hill) (4) Sey Dan Taung (Yellow orpiment hill) (5) Myin Thi Lar Taung (Realger or red orpiment hill) (6) Duthta Taung (Copper Sulphate crystal or Bule vitriol hill (7) Yey Hle Taung (Water spring or sprout hill) (8) Beloo-ma Taung (Ogress hill) and (9) Kye-ni Taung (Copper hill). These small hills produce the minerals for which they are named and known. When King Mindon (A.D.1853-78) built a new capital on the site near Mandalay Hill.Mandalay Hill was developed and embellished by one Buddhist her-mit named U Khan Ti (A.D 1866-1948) in British colonial times.He was a monk from Nyaung Lun village near Yamethin town. Mandalay Hill has suffered damage and destruction by natural disasters, the ravages of the Second World War and human vandalism.Seasonal wild flowers, one for every month bloomed in profusion which youths gathered during Waso and Tabaung festivals. |
